Why You Won’t Start a Business: Lack of Business Knowledge
This is part 5 of 6 in a 6 post series addressing the 5 horrible excuses people make to not start a business.
Previously, we addressed the fear of failure, lack of job security, and unwillingness to work slave hours people use as excuses in not starting their own businesses. This week, we’ll examine the excuse of not having business knowledge as a reason to avoid starting a business.
But I know nothing about having a business!
When asked why others don’t wish to start a business, I’m often met with,
“I’m not an entrepreneur.” or
“I don’t know how to run a business.”
I hear this excuse fairly often. It’s easy to look at a serial entrepreneur like Mark Cuban or Richard Branson and think, “There’s no way I could ever do that!”
The good news is, you truly don’t need to!
It takes time.
First off, it’s important to realize that these entrepreneurs didn’t hustle themselves into billionaire extraordinaires overnight. It took time for them to reach their current status. So, there’s really no need to compare yourself to them. As Jon Acuff says, “Don’t compare your beginning to someone else’s middle.” In fact, don’t compare your progress to anyone else’s except your yesterday.
Second, to create a business that helps you afford to RV full time, you don’t even have to be like them! I’m not talking about becoming a serial entrepreneur or running a multi-million dollar business. All you need to do is create a business that generates enough profits to let you afford to live the RV lifestyle of your dreams. Simple enough, right? Not all business owners need to be billionaires and truly, if that’s not your style, it’s okay.
Nobody’s Born With It
And the great news is that you don’t have to be born with the skills to run a business. Now, it’s true that you may not have the knowledge or skills to do that… for now. But the good news is, the art of running a business can be learned!
Allow me to put it this way:
When you were born, did you know how to talk?
Could you add and subtract numbers?
Could you walk?
Could you feed yourself?
Could you drive a car?
Spoiler alert: the answer to all of the above is a big, fat, resounding no.
You weren’t born knowing how to do any life skill! But you learned them, and now they are second nature to you. You no longer think about how to walk or feed yourself… you just do it!
Different Aspects of Running A Business
It’s the same way with learning to run a business.
You might not know accounting and how to keep your books. But you can learn. (And, if you don’t enjoy it, you can hire a bookkeeper or accountant as soon as your business is profitable.)
You may not yet know how to sell, (and maybe you’ve even had some horrible experiences selling in the past—band candles, anyone?) but you can learn the right way to sell with complete integrity—no pressure, no slimy “always be closing” sales tactics, and no fear of rejection.
You might not know how to launch a website, or create a newsletter, or record online courses… there’s really no magic here. These are all just skills you can learn as you go.
So How Can You Learn Business?
“Some of us learn from other people’s mistakes and the rest of us have to be other people.”
– Zig Ziglar
Of course, there are multiple ways to learn. One way is to just start doing, and learn as you go. The downside of this is, as Zig Ziglar once said, “Some of us learn from other people’s mistakes and the rest of us have to be other people.”
Another way to learn is to find a guide to help you. A good guide can show you techniques that work and help you avoid pitfalls that could cost you time and money.
So now you have a choice: do nothing, and look wistfully at others who are living your dream; start out on your own to create a business, and learn as you go; or hire a guide to help you create a successful business in as little time as possible. Which will it be?
If you’d like a guide, let’s chat. I can help you understand what you need in a guide, and if I’m the right guide for you. Give me a call!
