How Book Yourself Solid by Michael Port Transformed my Business
In this video, I'm talking about the book that transformed my business. And it can transform yours, too!
Hey there,
When I first heard about Book Yourself Solid, the book by Michael Port, I thought, "Wow! That sounds absolutely... Actually it sounds kind of icky."
I mean, it conjured up images of being booked over my head, having more clients than I can handle, not knowing what to do, not having time to breathe, let alone having time to go out and have fun RVing.
Fortunately, though, I did pick up a copy and I skimmed through it and I really liked what I found.
First of all, that's not what Book Yourself Solid® means. It's not Overbooked Solid. It's Booked Solid®. It's having all the clients you can handle, and you get to decide how many clients that is. So, no, you're not going to be over your ears and clients. You're just going to have the right number of clients for you.
Hi, I'm Don Downs of RV Business Coach. Today I want to talk about the power of the first chapter of Book Yourself Solid.
Like I said, I read the first chapter and it hooked me and it drew me in. The first chapter is called the Red Velvet Rope Policy, and it's based on the first philosophical principle of Book Yourself Solid. And that principle is:
"There are certain people in this world you're meant to serve... and others? Not so much!"
Now, there's two key elements in that:
- The first element is you're meant to serve. We run service businesses and we're here to serve other people.
- But the second element is you don't have to serve everybody.
You only need to serve your ideal clients. And ideal clients are those who energize you, excite you, and bring out your best work.
Now, have you ever seen an award show like maybe the Oscars? You know, the actors and actresses pull up, when they get out of the car, and there's like these red velvet ropes that guide the way in and maybe there's a guy there who checks their credentials and unhooks the rope and lets them in, and hooks it back so nobody else can get in.
Well, Michael Port says we should implement something like that in our business. So that's why he calls it the Red Velvet Rope Policy, and basically it's a filtration system that only allows in our ideal clients. And again, ideal clients are the people who energize you, excite you, and bring out your best work.
Now, imagine how powerful it would be for your business to surround yourself with only these ideal clients. No duds. None of those people that irritate you, that are always haggling on price, and complaining about everything you do, and dragging you down.
Instead, by only allowing in the best clients you have the energy to serve them and to deliver your best work.
Now, I'll admit it takes guts to turn away clients, but in the long run, you're better off. When you only serve ideal clients, you can't wait to get up in the morning to get to work and start serving them. You feel great because you're doing what you're meant to do. You love the work you're doing and you're serving your ideal clients who will happily pay you for that business.
Like I said earlier, I read this chapter and I was immediately drawn in, and I'm glad I was because there's 15 more chapters of equally great stuff in the book. In fact, I love the system so much, I went on to become a Certified Book Yourself Solid Coach. So really, I could talk your ear off all day about that, but I won't do that. I just want to talk about this one chapter.
I'm going to leave you with this thought:
How much better would your business be today if you served only ideal clients, if you served only clients who energize you, excite you and bring out your best work?
How much more fun would that be? How much more money could you make if you only serve the clients who brought out your best work?
And I have a great offer for you today. Because I'm a Certified Book Yourself Solid Coach, I can offer you a free copy of Chapter One of Book Yourself Solid. That's right. The Red Velvet Rope Policy, this chapter I'm talking about, it can be yours for free.
